UX Research for World-Class 2D Fashion Design Software

As designers, we know that creating great products goes far beyond just functional requirements. The user experience – how intuitive, efficient and satisfying a product is to use – is paramount.

That’s why I proposed to Morgan Tecnica an extensive user experience (UX) research to guide the design of latest 2D modeling software for fashion designers and patternmakers – 2Design

Morgan Tecnica, well known and renowned for the style and performances of its cutting tables for fashion industry, is on a mission to create the world’s premier 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software for fashion patternmaking and design.

The goal is to seamlessly blend exceptional usability with the renowned Italian aesthetic and details.

To achieve this, we went beyond just technical requirements – we relyed on rigorous user experience (UX) research to deeply understand how all the involved stakeholders work and interact with the 2D software environment.

About Morgan Tecnica

With decades of experience innovating fashion cutting tables, Morgan Tecnica is a pioneering force in the European CAD market.

They are obsessed with crafting tools that harmonize cutting-edge technology with the timeless principles of style that have made Italian fashion iconic globally.

The focus is empowering designers to bring their creative visions to life through software optimized for their real-world needs and workflows.

The UX Research Process

To guide development of our next-generation 2D CAD package, we employed a powerful multi-method UX research approach backed by established scientific principles:

In-Depth User Interviews: One-on-one conversations allowed us to capture rich qualitative insights into how patternmakers interact with and perceive design software tools.

Contextual Observation: By observing users in their actual work environments, we identified usability issues and bottlenecks that surveys alone may have missed.

Environmental Analysis: Examining the physical workspace layout and organizational factors that impact user performance and experience.

Competitive Benchmarking: A comparative analysis of competing CAD products to assess relative strengths, shortcomings and opportunities. The 2D cad market is concentrated in few hands and only few outsiders, like CLO are really shaking the status-quo.

Online Content Analysis: Scrutinizing user feedback on forums and reviews to understand unfiltered opinions and needs from users and students.

While the specific results are confidential as development is ongoing, these complementary techniques generated a comprehensive understanding of stakeholders needs, behaviors and mental models across different roles, skill levels and contexts of use.

This user-centered foundation, united with a massive flow mapping is key to designing software that feels intuitive while still delivering robust functionality.

The research is not only crucial to focus the engineers efforts on future features, but helps the developers to undestand users perspective and everyday goals.

Beyond just data gathering, we will actively incorporate user feedback and testing throughout the iterative design cycle. Continuous input from real patternmakers and designers ensures we stay aligned with real-world needs as the software evolves.

By investing in profound user research from the start, Morgan Tecnica can create CAD tools purpose-built for the modern fashion design workflow – combining an elegant Italian interface with the unparalleled usability required of industrial-grade software.

We are committed to this disciplined, user-centered process of uncovering needs, validating designs and rapidly iterating to push creative boundaries
